Beginning Drop Spindle Spinning Late August
Instructor: Samantha Loftin
Drop spindle spinning is one of the oldest and simplest methods of making yarn. In this half-day class, students will learn the basics of how to spin on a drop spindle, including how to “ply on the fly”, wind yarn on a niddy-noddy to create a skein, and how to finish your spun yarn and set the twist. Sam will introduce different kinds of spindles such as a support spindle and a Turkish spindle (shown in the second photo). Students will also learn about using hand-carders, and blending colors and fibers on the blending board.
No experience is necessary. Adults and older children are both welcome in this class.
Wool roving is provided in class, as well as a drop spindle that is yours to keep. Additional wool and supplies will be available to purchase from our storeroom after class.
